CHAMBERSUBURG GAZETTE
Today is July 1st ,1863, I am writing this from the Chambersburg Gazette office. All of the soldiers are worn out and tired. There are plenty of injuried soldiers and horse's. We still have our flag. We are running out of ammunition but we have plenty of guns with bayonets on them. Sergant Meades Headquaters was blown up and a few soldiers were killed. Sergant Meades wasn't in his headquaters when it got blown up.There cannons shot from left to right. You can hear the soldiers yelling for help as they get shot. You can see bodys, fire and guns everywhere. A famous saying is" There are times when a corps. commanders life doesn't count". General Pickett came and said " For men up and to your post and let no man forget today, that you are from all of Virginia." I saw Armistead fall and was laying near a cannon. I could hear the Yankees yelling Fredricksburg over and over again.Amistead said " We are all sons of Virginia and every man here knows his duty."There are horse's running around from where the soldiers have been shot off of them. There is very little water for the soldiers.
